$1 million settlement in motorycle accident suit

A police officer from Buffalo, New York will receive a $1 million settlement in connection with a motorcycle accident suit that he filed against the teen driver whose SUV swerved in front of him in 2007.  The police officer, who had returned to full duty once before after being shot twice in the line of duty, is now on leave, hoping to return to active, but restricted, once his health improves.

A $1 million settlement sounds like a lot of money, but the victim of this motorcycle accident is still a young man -- just 44 -- but he will have a lifetime of health problems ahead of him.  Further, it is pretty clear that his career has been mostly derailed due to the injuries from this accident in that he currently has an assignment with the police department in the camera room.

Still $1 million is a significant amount of money, and is more than many accident victims receive due to the low policy limits on the insurance policies carried by the at-fault drivers.  We strongly recommend to our clients - especially those who ride motorcycles - that they carried underinsured motorist insurance coverage for as high a limit as they can comfortably afford to help protect themselves financially against a devastating accident like this one.
