Barry's Publications

Barry Doyle has been representing the victims of negligence and their families in personal injury and wrongful death cases since receiving his license to practice law 12 years ago. A tenacious and creative advocate for his clients, he has prosecuted many different kinds of personal injury and wrongful death cases.

Education

Barry grew up in Evanston, Illinois and graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1987. He attended the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor where he received his undergraduate degree in Political Science in 1991. As a senior, he was awarded the Bob Ufer Memorial Scholarship for scholarship and service.

After completing his undergraduate studies, he attended the Loyola University of Chicago School of Law for his legal training. His studies focused heavily on course work relating to courtroom advocacy, civil procedure, evidence, and personal injury law - training which he employs even today.

Law school success

Barry achieved great academic success in law school, finishing in the top 10% of his class and being named to the Dean's List each semester. Additionally, he received the American Jurisprudence Awards for achieving the highest grade in four subjects: Criminal Law, Insurance Law, Federal Civil Rights Legislation, and First Amendment Rights.

Barry was selected by one of his professors to assist in updating a textbook on appellate procedure. In the 1994 spring semester he was selected as a judicial extern by Magistrate Judge Edward Bobrick of the federal court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Additionally, while in law school, Barry received a great deal of practical law training as a law clerk for several prominent Chicago personal injury law firms and as a volunteer student extern in the Cook County State Attorney's office. His academic success culminated in May 1994 with receipt of his law degree, cum laude.

After completing law school, Barry passed the bar examination and was admitted to practice law in state courts in Illinois and in federal court in the Northern District of Illinois.

Wide experience

He has handled hundreds of cases to conclusion, including those involving:

and other general negligence matters. Over thirty of those cases have been tried to conclusion. Because of the diligent and creative manner in which Barry prepared the cases, many others have resulted in very favorable settlements to the client.

Memberships

Barry is active in several bar associations, including: the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Barry served as the Co-Chair of the Tort (Personal Injury) Law Committee of the Young Lawyers Section of the Chicago Bar Association from 1998 through 2003.

Amicus Curiae Committee

He volunteers his time with the Amicus Curiae Committee of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. "Amicus Curiae" translates in Latin roughly as "friend of the court," and the purpose of the Amicus Curiae Committee is to submit legal briefs to the Illinois Supreme Court in cases where there are legal issues which are important to persons who have been a victim of negligence or will be a victim of negligence in the future.

Barry prepared the amicus brief on behalf of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association in Haddick v. Valor Insurance Company, a case which re-defined an insurer's duty to settle cases and its liability for failing to do so. Barry submitted another amicus brief on behalf of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association in the case of Dardeen v. Kuehling, which addresses an insurer's liability for pre-suit destruction of evidence

Publications

Barry has been published in various legal publications. His article Apportionment of Settlements Between Wrongful Death and Survival Actions - A Key to Maximizing Total Recovery appeared in the Winter 2003 issue of Trial Journal. He is currently working on other articles.

In addition, Barry has also prepared numerous papers and/or spoken at continuing legal education seminars. These include:

  • Demonstrative and Reconstruction Evidence
  • Sole Proximate Cause
  • Apportionment of Wrongful Death and Survival Settlements
  • Bad Faith Failure to Settle
  • Duty to Defend
  • Discovery in Bad Faith Claims: Plaintiff's Perspective
